Did you know that Chat operates pretty much the same way as the Universe?

After taking me on yet another wild goose chase I decided to find out how Chat actually works – and so I asked it a series of questions designed to uncover its architecture.

I’ve been doing the same thing with the Universe for years – but those answers aren’t nearly as verbose, 😆

Ask Chat: “Tell me about your architecture.”

And it will tell you:

•  I draw from a huge database – but what I draw forth depends on what I hear in your question.
• If your question is very generic, I will either come up with an overarching answer – or with the most likely answer you’re looking for.

Kinda like Google’s auto-fill in the search prompt: there’s a probability factor at play.

When prompted (pun intended) it will go on to tell you that

• I select my output entirely based on your input.
• If your tone is reflective, I will pick a different response than had your query been structured.

What came back over and over, and this is a biggie!, is that Chat’s response is at no point intended to validate the veracity of your input.

It doesn’t know and it doesn’t care.

Which is why, earlier this year, it told me, three times in a row, that, yes, 8 is half of 12.

That is not just a funny anecdote followed by a rolling-eye-emoji – it is the truth of ChatGPT – and all AI:

• They are not tools with independent agency.
• They are following patterns and protocols based on the prompt.

Here’s the thing though:

The exact same thing is true for the Universe.

Like Chat,

• The universe does not make random – or wilful – choices,
• It does not wilfully decide what to send you and what to withhold
• It is merely responding to your inputs: your beliefs, your focus, your emotions, your actions.

So you need to give good prompts.
